Sensory Support Kits

Connecting with the Libraries of Durham.

All the aspects that make attending sport events exciting for most fans can make it uncomfortable for others who may experience sensory overload.

Our commitment to hosting an inclusive Games extends to all participants and spectators too. By connecting with the libraries of Durham, we have collaborated and led to the Ajax, Clarington, Oshawa, Pickering, and Whitby Libraries all purchasing Sensory Support Kits that are now available for loan.

The sensory kits contain an assortment of items designed to reduce stress and anxiety, stimulate learning, and provide comfort in unfamiliar environments. Developed by Autism Canada, the kits contain several tools, as well as an information pamphlet on how to support individuals experiencing a sensory shutdown.
Thank you to our Durham Libraries. We hope these kits will support additional families in attending and enjoying our Durham Region 2023 Ontario Parasport Games.

Our partnership with Durham Libraries has grown to include book displays and resources to support awareness of parasports and the Games, plus online promotion during the month of January.

The libraries are also hosting a virtual panel discussion with para-athletes, coaches, and organizers to share how to participate in the Games, why they’re important for participants, and how to get involved in parasport year-round. This panel will be hosted on Zoom on January 18, from 7 to 8:30 pm. You can register for the panel through the Durham Libraries websites.
